COSTUMESClothing has a drastic effect on how people are perceived. With costume you can project the occupation, class, age, gender, and other characteristics of a character. Colors, fabrics, silhouettes, and patterns work together to tell the story of a character through their presentation.

"You Can't Take It With You" Costume Design Project
I was assigned the character "Grandpa" from the play "You Can't Take It With You" to design a costume for. I decided for his first entrance that he should wear a suit. I decided on this because in Act I Scene 1 (on page 13) Penny asks "Was it a nice commencement?" which explains that Grandpa was at a graduation. Since he was just out I thought that a semi-formal suit would be fitting. The rise of the pants is based off of similar images I found of men's pants during the 1930s. The suit jacket and the pants will be wool and the shirt could really by any formal shirt fabric. I chose Oxford fabric because it's a common men's dress shirts, specifically used to make the Oxford shirt. I chose it because it's a casual-to-formal fabric which fits in with the characters setting and personality. The second outfit I drew is for Grandpa to wear throughout the rest of the play. As he is an old man who seems to stay at home a lot I thought that a more comfortable and casual outfit would make sense. I opted for a sweater vest because in my research it seemed to be common during the time that the play is set in. The pants in this outfit are also wool. The shirt could be the same as last time and the sweatervest is either cotton or wool.
I kept the colors to greys, whites, and neutrals because it helps portray Grandpa as an older man, and also makes sense within the context of the Great Depression which was happening during the time period of the play. Romeo and Juliet Design ProjectThis project is still in progress.

MAKEUP
Ingénue Makeup
Our TA taught us how to do Ingénue makeup during class on Monday that 24th, and then on Thursday we got to recreate the look ourselves. Ingénue makeup is the stage makeup for a typical, relatively young woman. I think that this was good first look to try because many of the steps were familiar and the look is close to everyday, normal makeup. I brought some of my own makeup for this process. During the class I realized that I didn't need special brushes or makeup in order to complete the look. I was able to be more resourceful. I forgot my eyeliner so to emphasize my eyes I made a wing with dark eyeshadow instead. When I look at the before and after pictures I see a big difference, the blush and eyeshadow really bring more life to my face.
In the future I know what materials I need to bring to be prepared for this makeup look, but I also know that I can work around obstacles that come up. I realize that end product is really what's important when it comes to makeup and it's okay if you need to alter the process slightly if you don't have the materials.

Old Age Makeup
After learning how to do Ingénue makeup we tried old age makeup on Friday. Unlike the other look there were more unfamiliar steps that I had never done before. The process was new to me and I enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone. We had to really inspect the movement of our face to see where the wrinkles would be. We used highlight and character shadow to draw on the wrinkles. I had to be more careful and delicate while applying this makeup because I had to draw on finer lines. For this process there wasn't the same pressure that the end result had to "look pretty" like makeup normally does but rather it should be effective. Because of this I felt like I was able to take more risks. I think I have lots of room to improve on old age makeup but I feel good about my first attempt.
Learning how to do old age makeup helped me realize that I can transform my face with makeup. It opened my eyes to how much of a difference makeup could have an presenting an actor as a character. |
